Everybody deserves to be treated fairly — this is the vision of the Isle of Wight Council and why we are reviewing our equality objectives.
In line with the public sector equality duty (section 149 of the Equality Act (2010)), we are asking for your views on our five new equality objectives:
1. Understanding community impacts when making business decisions;
2. promoting good relations;
3. promoting awareness;
4. increasing accessibility;
5. compliant procurement and commissioning.
Councillor Stuart Hutchinson, Cabinet member for resources, said: “The council’s equality and diversity policies are already pretty good, but we want to move from good to excellent.
“That’s why we are consulting on improvements we could make. We can always do better, and with input from this consultation, we will.
“Equal and fair treatment must be inherent in every decision we make.
“The improved policy will support good decision making to ensure we fully consider how people in the community will be affected by any change, in particular when introducing, amending or ending a policy, strategy or service.
“These objectives will ensure equality and diversity issues are at the forefront of any of our plans that are made, the services that are developed and actions taken from 2019-2022.”
An action plan has also been developed to support the embedding of these objectives in the way the council operates.

They seek to support the council’s vision to be a great place to live, work and visit and support our ambitions to:
• Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct prohibited by the act;
• advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not;
• foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
