Trading Standards are warning residents to be aware of scammers purporting to be from the council. We have had reports this week about a variety of scams that seem to be doing the rounds at the minute.
- Scammers are texting residents to tell them that they are due a Council Tax refund and you just need to click on a link and provide some details. This is a SCAM the council will never text you or contact you in this way
- Scammers are also phoning residents purporting to be the council saying that you have been overcharged for your banding and that they can get a refund for you – the catch? You have to pay £165 for the service! The council will NEVER charge you to check your council tax band – this is a SCAM
- We have had reports of doorstep callers purporting to be from the Council offering surveys for free home insulation. Whilst the council does operate a home insulation scheme they will always contact you by letter first giving you the opportunity to opt out – they will never cold call you. Details of the council-approved ECO home insulation scheme, Warm Up Wight, can be found at warmupwight.co.uk
REMEMBER – treat any unexpected call, message or knock at the door from someone you don’t know with suspicion.
