GP exercise referral scheme success

A 1Leisures Exercise on Referral Scheme customer has been celebrating their success since joining the “life-changing” programme.

The exercise on referral scheme is open to anyone with a medical condition that would benefit from taking part in physical activity on a regular basis.

1Leisure referral instructors work to develop a personalised programme that includes one-to-one support and activities that are suitable for the medical condition.

The referral scheme offers great value for money with a reduced membership price during the referral period.

Patrick, 78, was referred to 1Leisure four years ago when he was first diagnosed with curvature of the spine.

He said. “I initially started at the Heights after being referred by my GP; I wasn’t sure what to expect but I am so pleased  I made that start to improve my health.

“I come to the Heights three times a week on my mobility scooter and use the gym. I have had one-to-one support to find the right exercises that work for me and my condition. This has had a huge positive impact on both my physical health and mental health.

“When the referral period came to an end, I decided to take out the Gold Card membership and I have absolutely no intention of stopping. I have made some great friends both with other members and 1Leisure staff. It has literally been life-changing for me.”

Michael Lewin, Fitness Manager at 1Leisure, added:  “Having worked in health and fitness for more than 20 years nothing gives greater job satisfaction than seeing 1Leisure referrals making progress, improving their quality of life and enjoying exercise. The 1Leisure referral scheme is so important for our local community.”

Councillor Julie Jones-Evans, Cabinet member for leisure, said: “The 1Leisures Exercise on Referral Scheme is operated by the Isle of Wight Council’s 1Leisure service in partnership with Island GPs and other health professionals across the Island to support local people with their physical activity.

“It’s great to hear the referral scheme had a positive impact on Patrick’s well-being and encouraged him to become a regular at 1Leisure.

“It is a great way for people with long-term conditions to increase levels of physical activity. Over the last six months, 1Leisue has received over 240 referrals from one of the 45 referring agencies across the Island, which includes GPs, physio and chiropractors.

“Regular physical activity reduces the risk of a range of medical conditions including cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. It relieve anxiety and improve mood.”

All referrals are required to attend an initial assessment and will also be given ongoing support to help them increase their weekly activity levels at one of 1Leisure three participating leisure centres.
